"So I started a transformer company"

Soursound was founded by Bryan Sours, who began his career in 2001 as a tube amp technician repairing, restoring, and voicing vintage amplifiers, eventually becoming the premier repair shop in Portland, Oregon. Over the last 25+ years, he has logged tens of thousands of hours working on hundreds of amp models, from everyday classics to the rarest gems. This hands-on experience offered a unique perspective into what truly makes an amplifier great. During the process of designing his own sought-after handmade amplifiers, Bryan became captivated by the core of tube amp performance: the transformers. After more than a decade of experimenting with outside manufacturers, a realization was had that in order to fully achieve the sounds inside his head he needed to be building the transformers himself. That pursuit, equal parts obsession and craft, became what is today Soursound.

Right away it became obvious that there is a great disconnect between the people who are creating audio equipment and the people who produce the magnetic components used in them. The bigger companies who make their fortunes producing these components don’t have the knowledge, experience, or even the listening tastes to know what design changes will yield in the final amplifier. We are very passionate about connecting with the ears and the ideas of the companies we work with to create new designs that are inspiring to them and their customers.

Transformers With a Voice

At Soursound, a transformer is not just a circuit element, it’s a source of character. We design our iron for its sonic imprint just as intentionally as we design it for its electrical performance. By combining deep technical understanding with a musician’s ear, we create transformers that inspire musical creativity and authenticity.
